Introduction to the USMLE

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a series of three-step multiple choice exams (MCQ), designed to evaluate the knowledge of future physicians in three integral components of modern medical practice: basic science, clinical science and clinical medicine. The candidate that successfully passes and preferably excels in these exams becomes a fully-certified physician with the legal ability to practice medicine in the USA.

USMLE Step 1 examination tests the candidate’s grasp in the following preclinical-laboratory disciplines:

  • Biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Anatomy
  • Histology
  • Embryology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Biostatistics and Medical Ethics

USMLE Step 1 score is an integral component of the physician’s application in the Main Residency Match, a procedure that facilitates the hiring process of medical graduates by hospitals across the US, to be trained in the medical specialty of their choice. Certain specialties demand a higher score than others and as a result, excelling in this exam offers a wider range of choices and possibilities for aspiring young physicians.
