Announcements on USMLE – Step 1

Changes in Step 1 P/F score policy

On November 2020, the FSMB and NBME announced the alteration of the Step 1 scoring system from a three-digit system to a Pass/Fail. The above has been proposed to reduce the current excessive focus on the medical graduates performance on the USMLE examinations, and balance graduates academic achievements and well-being. This motion has also been supported by the ECFMG and will be effective January 1st, 2022.

Delay in score reporting

While most reports are delivered 3-4 weeks following the testing date, due to annual modifications of the testing item pools, there may be delays in some reports. Subsequently, test takers that desire to have their reports before July 7th, 2021 are advised to sit the exam before May 3rd, 2021.

Announcements on USMLE – Step 2

Primary suspension and discontinuation of step 2 CS

Following the COVID-19 suspension of the Step 2 CS examination and the announcement of the intention to relaunch it on November 2019, the FSMB and NBME, announced the discontinuation of such efforts and the discontinuation of the Step 2 CS exam format, on January 26, 2021.
The above prompted ECFMG, to inform International applicants that the five pathways, aiming to ensure adequate communication and clinical skills of the International medical graduates, established during the COVID-19 suspension of Step 2 CS, will continue to be offered with the addition of another pathway.
Guidelines including details on eligibility, application and documentation required are yet to be published.
A consistent requirement of the pathways for the candidates that seek ECFMG certification and participation in the 2022 residencymatching programs, is to pass the Occupational English test (OET**) for health-care professionals.
